He joined siblings Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon to make up one of the biggest pop phenomenons of the Seventies.

In 1978 a 20-year-old Michael appeared in screen musical The Wiz, a urbanised retelling of The Wizard Of Oz, starring as the scarecrow opposite Diana Ross’ Dorothy

His 1982 album Thriller took the music world by storm. The disc, which included Billie Jean and Beat It, was the first to go to number one in the US and UK album charts

In 1983 Michael debuted his signature move – the moonwalk – on TV in front of 47 million viewers.

Michael was renowned for his generosity – all the proceeds from 1992’s Dangerous tour went to charity – and in 1984 President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy honoured his commitment to helping others

In 1988 the star bought Neverland, his home and private amusement park.

Another equally iconic lady – Elizabeth Taylor – was a long-time pal. She’s also godmother to his two elder children, Paris Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson I

The 1991 release of Thriller was followed by a world tour. Michael marked his 35th birthday on stage in Singapore with a typically energetic show

Two of music’s most influential families were united when the moonwalking star married Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie in May 1994.

Michael’s second wife was nurse Deborah Rowe, who married the singer in Australia on November 14, 1996. Debbie, who’d met Michael ten years earlier, had two children with the Billie Jean star – son Michael Junior Jackson, known as Prince, and daughter Paris Katherine

To protect his children’s identity, Michael, who had a second son Prince Michael Jackson II, often covered their faces with sheer veils when they stepped out in public.

he threw his weight behind the post-September 11 ‘United We Stand’ benefit concert, performing What More Can I Give

Although less often seen in the public eye as time went on, Michael made a special appearance in May 2008 when he attended the 50th birthday party of French fashion designer Christian Audigier.

In March 2009, thousands of fans gathered outside London’s O2 Arena to hear the king of pop announce details of his farewell shows
