Uzoamaka Nwanneka “Uzo” Aduba is a Nigerian-American actress who is known for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on the Netflix television series Orange Is the New Black, for which she won the Best supporting Actress in a Drama series at the Emmy Awards 2015.
Actress Uzo Aduba took home the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series on Sunday night, her second consecutive Emmy for this same role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes”.
Because the show was categorized as a comedy in 2014 and a drama in 2015, Aduba’s win makes her the first actress to win both a drama and comedy award for the same role — an honor previously held only by the actor Ed Asner.
Aduba thanked her fellow cast members and crew, the show’s corporate parents at Netflix, her personal team, and her family.
She was racing to get through all of the names on her list, but it didn’t sound like she was worried about playing off; instead, it was as if she was trying to get off the stage before being completely overcome.
When she spoke to her sister watching from the crowd and thanked her for her friendship, it was a moment that resonated with anyone who’s ever felt overwhelming love and pride in a sibling.
As she thanked a long list of people, Aduba broke down in tears. “I love you mostly because you let me be me,” she said. She finished her speech by thanking her sister, whom she brought as her guest to the Emmys. “I am humbled to call myself your sister,” she said. “I love you so much.”
If Aduba keeps giving speeches like this, viewers will be happy if she dominates this category for years to come.
